Despite Best Offensive Effort Charger Girls fall to CAM, 74-67

The ACGC girls' basketball team scored a number of firsts in its game with CAM last night, but still fell to a solid Cougar team 74-67 on the Charger hard court. The Chargers went over 60 points for the first time in the brief two year history of ACGC hoops. So, the 67 points represents a school record for ACGC girls' basketball. For the first time four players scored in double figures for the locals and for just the second time the Chargers scored in double figures in every quarter, the first time being when ACGC topped Ogden 54-48 a week ago.

The Chargers opened fast against the 11-3 Cougars, as they raced to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter thanks to 4 of 9 field goal shooting and 8 of 9 free throw shooting. CAM gradually narrowed the gap in the second stanza and took the lead for good at at 33-31 with 1:40 left in the half. The half ended with CAM leading by a single point, 35-34.

The second half saw the Cougars continue to add to their lead, but also saw some competitiveness out of the Chargers. A dry spell for the Chargers at the outset of the final quarter led to a 62-50 Cougar lead at the five minute mark. ACGC managed to close the gap to the final score of 74-67 when Jorja Hoover and Mady Smith each scored two points in the final thirty seconds of play.

Jaden Carrick led the four Chargers in double figures with 17 points, followed by Sierra O'Brien with 14, Savana Fuller with 13 and Mady Smith with 10. Fuller led the team in rebounds with 8 while Carrick pulled down 7 boards. Olivia Laabs led the team in assists with 4 and in steals with 5. The team shot a very respectable 45% from the field on 21 of 47 tries, and made 22 of 39 free throws. On the down side the team continues to be plagued with turnovers, committing 32 last night that resulted in 29 Cougar points.

There is virtually no turn around time for the Chargers as both girls' and boys' teams head for Panora tonight to take on the Panthers. Girls' tipoff is scheduled for 6 PM.
