Charger Boys Finish Second at Perry Relays; Girls Place Third

The ACGC track teams traveled to Perry last night for the Perry High School Davis Coed Meet, and both teams turned in good performances against good competition on a cool and breezy evening. The Charger girls finished third among six teams, while the boys finished second in a field consisting of several larger schools for both the girls' and boys' meets. WCAC track power Panorama won the girls meet, while another WCAC team, Des Moines Christian, captured the boys event.

Four Charger girls won a total of five golds, with Sarah Schelling winning the long jump, Mady McDermott the shot put, Kate Crawford the 800 meter and 3000 meter runs, and Audrey Stowe the 400 meter hurdles. Three individuals had first place finishes for the boys, as Caden Wardyn won the long jump, Clay Bllheimer the 800 meter run, and Noah Nelson the 3200 meter run. In addition, the boys' 800 meter relay team, consisting of Gabe Rowley, Justin Plowman, Grady Laabs, and Dylan Soper captured first in the 800 meter relay.

Girls' mentor Colin Shawgo was upbeat about his team's performance. "Once again, another good early meet for us. It was cold, but for the most part our girls went out and really worked hard to get good times and throws," he said. "Almost everyone got season bests, and those that didn't were pretty close, which is saying a lot with the weather. With the first week in the books, I am really excited for the rest of the year."

Boys' coach Tyler Mosbach was equally pleased with his teams performance when he said,"In a meet with unfavorable conditions, the guys focused on two things--competing and getting better. And they did that without question. As a team we needed a meet to break the practice cycle and mix it up. At the end of the night there were a lot of happy faces and that is what makes practicing for over a month without a competition worth it. We had a ton of PR's and for the first meet of the year in the cold that is pretty remarkable. We are excited for the next meets and an opportunity to show off the work the team has been putting in."

Next week's schedule includes meets for both the boys' and girls' teams at Panorama on Tuesday, April 3 and in Guthrie Center for the first home meet on Thursday.
