Baseball Team Ends Losing Streak! Wins Over East Union, 10-3
The ACGC Charger baseball team ended an eleven game losing streak last night when it defeated East Union of Afton by a convincing 10-3 score on the local diamond. Behind a solid pitching performance by Caden Wardyn and timely hitting by the Charger team, ACGC broke open a tight game with a seven run barrage in the fourth inning.
After East Union put up a deuce on the scoreboard in the first inning, the Chargers countered with two runs of its own in the second inning to tie the game. The Eagles picked up a run in the third inning to take a one run lead at 3-2.
In the Chargers' fourth inning at bat, the team erupted for seven runs and took command of the game. The Chargers batted around in the inning, sending eleven batters to the plate. Consecutive singles by Reid Rumelhart, Logan Brincks, and Nathan Schiller, an EU passed ball and an error resulted in the first three scores in the inning. With Bryce Littler, Ben Kingery, and Owen Hansen all getting on base through fielder's choices, two EU errors, and with base hits by Caden Wardyn and Garrett Walhovd, the Chargers put seven runs on the board in the inning. ACGC added a single run in the fifth inning to complete the scoring .
Walhovd and Rumelhart led the Charger "charge" with two hits, including Walhovd's double--the only Charger extra base hit. Five different players had an RBI for ACGC including Quenton Spack, Bryce Littler, Wardyn, Walhovd, Rumelhart, and Logan Brincks. The Chargers had their best night on the base paths, accounting for six stolen bases.
Wardyn threw a four hitter through 6 1/3 innings, while walking three and striking out eight. Eli Kading finished in relief, giving up one hit in two thirds of an inning. An elated Charger bench erupted when the final out was recorded, as the Chargers tasted the sweetness of victory for the first time this season.
The team has little time to savor its win, as they are playing at Van Meter tonight in a WCAC contest. The JV game will begin at 5 PM, with the varsity game to follow.
