Charger Rally Falls Just Short; Underwood Claims Tourney Title, 2-1

It was a pitcher's dual. Charger Savana Fuller and Underwood's Anna Hall both threw well and were backed up by solid defenses in a 2-1 thriller in the championship game of the ACGC softball invitational. Fuller gave up just five hits, while Hall surrendered nine. The Chargers stranded ten runners on the base paths, unable to get the clutch hit when needed. Despite the Charger loss, it was a well played game by both teams--fitting for a tournament championship.

After Underwood scored the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, ACGC tied it up in its second inning at bat when Genevieve "G" Hoover and Sierra O'Brien opened the at bat with infield singles. Jayden Carrick drove in Hoover when she grounded out to the shortstop to tie it up at one apiece.

The Eagles added what proved to be the winning run in the fourth inning when they put together

two hits and a passed ball to make the score 2-1.

A furious Charger rally in the bottom of the seventh inning came up just short. With two out in its final at bat, ACGC loaded the bases on successive singles by Jorja Hoover, Kylie Young, and Mady Kelsey. The game ended when "G"'s fly ball was caught by the Eagle right fielder. "And there was no joy in Mudville", to quote from the classic baseball poem, "Casey at The Bat."

Young, Kelsey, and O'Brien led the Charger hitting with two hits each. Fuller turned in her third solid pitching performance for the day, as she scattered five hits, while striking out four and not giving up a base on balls. She was aided by a defense that played errorless ball.

The 2-1 record for the tournament lifts the season record to 7-9. The Chargers will return to conference play on Monday when they travel to Stuart to face West Central Valley. According to the ACGC website the varsity will play first at 5:30, with the JV game to follow.
