Charger Boys Show Improvement, Fall to WCAC Leader Van Meter, 9-3

It isn't very often that a team's pitching staff will give up just three hits for a game and yet have the opponent score nine runs. But sadly that is what happened yesterday for the ACGC baseball team as it fell to league leading Van Meter, 9-3. The Charger defense struggled as it committed seven errors during the contest, which meant that only two of Van Meter's eleven runs were earned.

Van Meter opened the game with a run in the first inning, with the Chargers responding with two runs of their own when Caden Wardyn and Ben Kingery each drove in runs with base hits.

The lead was short lived, as the Bulldogs picked up two runs in the second inning to take the lead for good at 3-2. Van Meter increased its lead to 9-2 when the Chargers scored a run in its last at bat to make the final 9-3. ACGC loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning when Quenton Spack and Michael Ure each singled and Nathan Schiller was hit by a pitch. Bryce Littler was also hit by a pitch to drive in Spack. The game ended with a Garrett Walhovd fly ball to center field.

Charger mentor Dana Fink saw both positives and negatives in the loss. "Will (Byars) pitched a nice game and our hitting was better, but we can't commit seven errors and expect to win. Of the twenty runs Van Meter scored against us this season, one three were earned."

Byars pitched 5 1/3 innings and gave up just one hit while walking three and striking out the same number. Littler and Wardyn pitched the final 1 2/3 innings.

Six different Chargers had base hits including Littler, Wardyn, Kingery, Spack, Schiller and Ure. Wardyn's hit was a double.

The loss gives the team a 1-14 record overall and 1-12 in the WCAC. The season continues tomorrow (Monday) when the Chargers entertain Woodward Academy in a varsity double header scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM.
