Charger VB Survives "Do or Die"; Seventh Ranked Tri-Center Next on Thursday
The phrase "do or die" is often used to describe post season tournament play at any level. The meaning of course is that a team that advances is the "do", while a team that loses is figuratively dead, with its season coming to an abrupt end.
The convincing ACGC win over Ogden last night in the quarterfinals of the regional volleyball tournament means that the Chargers were a "do" team and are still alive on the tournament trail. It took the Chargers a bit to demonstrate their dominance, but once they did they easily disposed of the Bulldogs in three sets, 25-19, 25-13, and 25-9.
Trailing 9-8 in set one when veteran senior "G" Hoover came to the serve, the locals scored four consecutive points to take a 12-9 lead they would never surrender. The Chargers increased their lead to as many as eight points when Ogden rallied to within three at 22-19. Savana Fuller put an end to that with a big block that took the wind out of the Bulldog sails and the Chargers went on to the 25-19 win.
The second set was close early, but strong serving and play at the net enabled the Chargers to break away from a 6-5 lead to lead by 19-9 after service by Olivia Laabs. By the time the third set rolled around, it was clear that Ogden had run out of gas. The Chargers broke away from a 3 to 3 tie and raced to a 25-9 victory.
Chloe Largent and Olivia Laabs were strong at the net for the Chargers, with both coming up with a dozen kills on the night. They were aided by Audrey Stowe's twenty eight assists and a team total of thirty one digs. Largent,"G", and Laabs led in digs with eight, seven and six respectively. Savana Fuller led in blocks with four, while "G" was perfect from the service line, going seventeen of seventeen with for aces.
The match saw the return of Jadeyn Carrick who had been out with an injury. Her return will help bolster net play for the Chargers,
A tall task awaits the Chargers on Thursday, when they will face seventh ranked Tri-Center in Neola, with the opening serve scheduled for 7 PM.
