Madrid Spoils Boys' Opener, 88-47

An exceptionally quick and good shooting team from Madrid was too much for the Chargers' boys basketball team last night, as the visiting Tigers overwhelmed the home team by an 88-47 score in the first official game for the Chargers.

The game started out like it might be a close one, as the Tigers managed an 18-15 lead after the opening frame. All of that changed in the second quarter when Madrid outscored the Chargers 25-10 to take 43-25 lead going into the intermission. The outcome of the game was essentially decided by the halftime break.

The game started out well enough for the locals as Noah Sargent had the hot hand from beyond the arc. He hit a trio of three balls in the quarter, enabling the locals to stay close. But the second quarter belonged to the Tigers. Madrid hit 9 of 15 shots and was 4 for 4 from the charity stripe.

The Chargers, on the other hand, went cold, making just 4 of 15 attempts from the floor. The half ended with Madrid leading, 43-25. The Tigers expanded their lead to thirty points, 61-31 after the third quarter and managed another 27 points in the final stanza to total 88 points for the game.

Unofficially Madrid shot 58% from the field, making 32 of 55 shots. The Tigers were even better from the charity strip, as they made 18 of 21 for 86%. By contrast ACGC's shooting struggled from both the floor and the free throw line. The Chargers were accurate on 17 of 60 field goal attempts for 28% and made 7 of 17 free throws for 41%.

Two Chargers scored in double figures with Noah Nelson scoring11 points and Bryce Littler 10. Littler also had four assists. Lucas Marsh led in rebounds with 8 while Quynton Younker pulled down 7.

The competition continues to be strong, as the next outing for ACGC is a home tilt on Tuesday, Dec. 4 with perennial conference power Des Moines Christian. A preliminary girls' JV game will begin at 4:30, followed by the girls' and boys' varsity games .
