It's Sweep Week for Charger BB! Teams Go 5-0; Top I-35, 63-30 and 60-43

If there was anything that would help the Charger basketball players, and their coaches, and even their fans, get into the proper mood for the holiday season, it would be a couple of wins. Well, guess what! The past week was a first for ACGC basketball, as the Chargers swept five games from their opponents. Monday both girls and boys teams topped West Central Valley; Thursday the boys took care of CRB; and last night both teams handled Interstate-35. The Charger girls topped the Roadrunners, 63-30, while the boys tied a school record with twelve treys en route to a 60-43 victory.

The Charger girls settled the outcome of its game with the Roadrunners in the first half, as they blistered the nets with 63% shooting in the first sixteen minutes of the game. Racing to a 10-0 lead halfway through the first quarter, ACGC was never threatened by the out manned Roadrunners. By halftime the margin was sixteen points at 38-22. Charger shooting cooled in the second half, but the team steadily increased its lead over the hapless visitors with a stingy defense that gave up only five points in the second half. ACGC shot 50% from the field for the game, hitting 29 of 58 attempts.

Kennedy Young scored her first double double, as she netted 14 points to go along with a game high 10 rebounds. Jadeyn Carrick also scored in double figures with 10 points to go along with 5 assists and 4 steals. The team recorded a season high 23 assists, with Jorja Hoover leading the way with 8. Savana Fuller came off the bench to record 8 points in the second half.

Coach Dan Baker was pretty upbeat about his squad when he said, "I was very pleased with the way we played as a team. Our success is predicated on moving the ball around instead of trying to set up one individual and I believe last night was proof of how good we can be with everyone touching the ball. Kennedy Young continues to be our most consistent player by rebounding, defending, and scoring, although everyone contributed to a team win! We feel confident heading into the Christmas break and look forward to a successful second half."

The victory gives the girls an overall 6-4 record (4-3, WCAC) headed into the holiday break, as the season reaches the half way point. They will now have a full two weeks between games, as the next game will be on Friday, January 4 when Woodward-Granger comes to town.

On the boys side, the Chargers also had a good shooting first half with 56% accuracy including 6 of 11 from three point range. Still, the ACGC lead at the half was just seven points at 33-26. A solid defensive performance in the third quarter enabled the Chargers to increase their lead to fourteen at 48-34 heading into the final eight minutes. In the last five minutes of the third quarter the Roadrunners were held to just two points on one of eight shooting. That five minute stretch determined the outcome of the game, as the Roadrunners never threatened after that. The Charger defense surrendered only five I-35 field goals in the second half, holding the visitors to just seventeen points after the intermission.

Noah Sargent continued his hot three point shooting, connecting on five of six shots from behind the arc. He was one of four Chargers to score in double figures. In addition to Sargent's 15 points, Bryce Littler tallied 12 points, while Noah Nelson and "Q" Younker each had 10. Younker led in rebounds with 9, while Nelson handed out 6 assists. For the game ACGC made 23 of 51 field goals for a respectable 45%, while hitting on 12 of 27 three point tries for 44%. They attempted only four free throws, making two.

With the win the Chargers improved their season record to 4 wins and 5 losses (2-5, WCAC). Play will resume after the holiday break when ACGC will face Woodward-Granger on the Chargers home court on Friday, January 4.
