Charger Softball Drops Trio of Games at Atlantic Tourney
The ACGC softball team faced three teams from the Hawkeye Ten Conference Saturday at Atlantic and lost all three contests to the 3A and 4A schools. Atlantic beat up on the Chargers by a 14-1 score, Harlan topped the locals 3-0, and Creston won by an 11-4 score.
Atlantic jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one inning and never looked back. The Trojans added another four in the third inning and a six spot in the fourth inning to end the game by the twelve run mercy rule. Costly Charger errors in the first and third innings made the score more lopsided than it should have been.
The Chargers loaded the bases with one out in the first inning, but failed to score when two Chargers struck out swinging to end the threat. The lone Charger run came in it's final at bat when KylieYoung and Jadeyn Carrick hit consecutive doubles.
ACGC was limited to five hits by Trojan pitching, with Sierra O'rian getting two, and Young, Carrick, and Tori Fuller each getting one.
Savana Fuller and Jorja Hoover shared the pitching responsibilities, with Savana Fuller going the first three innings and Jorja Hoover pitching the final frame. Fuller give up twelve runs on seven hits. She walked five and struck out one. Hoover gave up three hits, two runs, while walking a single batter.
The Charger game with Harlan saw considerable improvement defensively, with ACGC committing no fielding errors. But this time the hitting was lacking, as Cyclone pitchers Tianna Kasperbauer and Emily Brouse combined for a two hitter. O'Brien got the first hit in the second inning when she led off with a single. In the Chargers' final at bat, ACGC loaded the bases when Kylie Young led off with a single, Saige O'Brien walked, and Jorja Hoover reached safely on a fielder's choice. But alas, all three were stranded to preserve the shutout for Harlan.
SavanaFuller went the distance in the circle and pitched well enough to win most games. She surrendered ten hits, while walking one and striking out four.
The hitting picked up for the Chargers in the final outing versus Creston, but Fuller's endurance in the pitching circle faded as she pitched her third game of the day. She gave up ten Creston hits, exhibited good control as she walked no Creston hitters, and struck out nine. Jorga Hoover and Sophia Rouse came in to relieve. Hoover face two batters in the sixth and Rouse came in to finish the game. She gave up one hit and one run.
The Chargers plated three runs in the third inning when Kylie Young and Tori Fuller each singled and J Hoover reached safely on a bunt to load the bases. A single by Savana Fuller,
a Creston error, and a fielder's choice resulted in three ACGC runs.
In the sixth inning ACGC scored its final run when "G" singled and scored after Kennedy Young's double and a fielder's choice.
Seven different Chargers got base hits, with Young's double the only extra base it.
The Chargers will try to get back on track tonight when they face Panorama in a WCAC contest. The junior varsity game is scheduled for 5:30 with the varsity game to follow. Go Chargers!
