Crawford Wins WCAC Cross Country Title! Girls Finish Second, Boys Fifth
Another chapter was written yesterday in the cross country dual between ACGC's Kate Crawford and Panorama's Ellie Waddle, and this time the stalwart Charger turned the tables and captured the WCAC individual championship. Last year and two years ago Waddle took the top prize, but the determined Crawford would have none of it this year as she topped the Panther junior by thirty eight seconds with a time of 19:50 to capture the gold. Crawford's performance and Rylee Sloss's fifth place finish in 21:02 helped the Charger girls' team to a second place finish on the Lake Panorama par three golf course. Charger freshman Kiersten Knobbe also finished in the top ten with a time of 21:43. Rounding out the Charger scoring were Jorja Hoover who placed twenty second in a time of 23:12 and Alyson Embleton whose time of 23:40 was good for twenty sixth place. Van Meter captured the team title with forty six points, while ACGC tallied sixty one.
Other Chargers who ran but did not figure in the team point total were Mia Ocheltree (33rd, 24:27), Jenna Stringer (35th, 24:39), Taylor Lemke (37th, 24:43), Jackie Trujillo-Garcia (4th, 25:09), Reagan Rumelhart (58th, 25:44), Keely Vasey (70th, 27:10), Belle Policky (74th, 27:38), Paxton Schneider (84th, 28:56), Kendra Campbell (85th, 29:04), and Kennedy Young (87th, 29:27). There were ninety eight girls who participated in the event.
The ACGC boys made a good showing as they finished fifth in the eleven team meet with one hundred and thirty two points while Des Moines Christian took the title with forty five points. The Chargers were once again without Trevin Suhr who has been the team's lead runner. All five of the Charger runners who figured in the team total were within twenty five seconds of one another. Pacing the Chargers was Justin Reinhart who ran the course in 18:46, good for twenty third place. Literally right behind in twenty fourth was Eli Kading who turned in a time of 19:06. Kaden Thompson (19:11) was only five seconds behind Kading in thirtieth place to round out the Charger scoring. Just one second behind Thompson was Donnie Swanson (19:12). Other runners included Austin Wetzel (35th, 19:22), Zac Moon (53rd, 20:01), Austin Wierick (54th, 20:03), Zander Kenyon (75th, 20:54), Nash Ayers (78th, 21:06), Lane Sheeder (101st, 22:35), Connor Larsen (117th, 23:33), Brennan Pederson (121st, 23:46), and Justin Davis (128th, 24:39). A total of one hundred and fifty five boys ran the 5 k course.
After the meet, coach Shawgo seemed pleased with the results. "The girls were able to get second with several ranked teams. We were able to beat a couple of teams that we had lost to earlier, so continued growth was good to see. Kate Crawford was able to get her second individual conference championship in her career. Along with Kate, Rylee Sloss made first team all conference and Kiersten Knobbe make second team.
"The boys had a good race as well, getting fifth as a team. The only teams to beat the Chargers were teams ranked in the top fifteen in their respective classes."
The Charger teams will return to the Panorama course next Thursday, October 24 for the state qualifying meet. The event is scheduled to begin at 4 PM. Go Chargers!
