Larsen Is WCAC Wrestling Champion! With Incomplete Roster, Team Finishes Last

On a day which otherwise was not what Charger fans would have hoped for, 132 pounder Gunnar Larsen was crowned champion yesterday at the WCAC meet held at Panorama High School. After receiving a first round bye, the Charger junior defeated Jackson Boese of Van Meter/Earlham by a technical fall, 21-6. It didn't take long for Larsen to lay claim to the title

as he pinned Matthew White of Woodward-Granger in less that a minute (0:57) in the championship match. The wins improve Larsen's overall record to 13-2 for the season.

ACGC was unable to fill its lineup, as the Chargers filled just eight out of fourteen weight classes. All of the Charger grapplers scored points, but with the depleted lineup, the team was able to score only 71.5 points which placed the team in last place out of the eight schools participating. Van Meter/Earlham won the team title with 225.5 points.

While Larsen claimed the gold, Cale Rowley was the only other Charger to claim a top three spot as he won the bronze for his third place finish at 145. Rowley improved his record to 13-6, winning his final two matches after falling in the semifinals. He came back to win in the consolation semifinals and took third place by winning a 7-5 decision over Braiden Beane of West Central Valley.

The team will take a break for the holidays and will resume competition when it hosts a dual event with several schools on Tuesday, January 7, with the wrestling to begin at 5:30 . Go Chargers!
