ACGC Girls Complete Regular Season With Win Over Madrid

The ACGC girls' basketball team finished their regular season with a 45-26 win over Madrid to clinch an upper division finish in the WCAC. The Chargers claimed fifth place in the ten team conference with an 8-7 won/ loss record, and an 11-10 record overall.
The Chargers left little doubt as to who fielded the better team, as they jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead and never looked back. Saige O'Brien's five points in the first three and a half minutes of the game got the Chargers off to a good start. Emerson Van Meter's trey and one from O'Brien increased the Charger advantage to 11-1 halfway through the quarter.
The ACGC defense held the Tigers to four points in the second quarter while the home team netted just eight points , but saw its lead grow to fifteen by halftime at 25-10.
Reagan Carney had a big third quarter when she scored all nine of the Charger points, with the lead swelling to nineteen points at 34-15. Carney connected on four of five field goal attempts and added a free throw to reach her nine point total. The teams played evenly in the final frame, with each scoring nine points to reach the final of 45-26.
Carney was the only Charger to score in double figures with 11 points, while O'Brien came up with 9 and Van Meter had 7. Pressley Buttler came off the bench to lead the team in rebounds with 8, and Carney came up with 4 steals. Sophie Dorsey led in assists with 3.
The Chargers shot 31% from the floor on 18 makes out of 58 attempts which included 4 treys out of 22 tries. They were 5 of 10 from the free throw line.
"I thought the girls came out with a lot of energy and executed their offense and defense really well throughout most of the game," assistant Charger coach Brett Dorsey said following the victory.
"It was a good win on senior night and hopefully our play carries into the post season," Dorsey concluded.
The team will open regional tournament play on Tuesday, February 15 with a home contest against West Central Valley. The teams split during the regular season with each team winning on its home court. The quarterfinal game with WCV is scheduled to begin at 7 PM.
