Charger Track: Both Boys and Girls Ranked in Top Twenty Five
The ACGC track and field teams are showing a lot of consistency as the season continues--the good kind! In last Thursday's meets at West Central Valley the boys won their fifth meet of the year, while the girls finished in second place behind Mount Ayr in the ten team meet.
The boys' consistency has earned them the number five spot in the state wide power rankings of class 2A teams. Treynor is ranked first, with Forest City, Anamosa, and Clarinda also ranked ahead of ACGC.
The Charger girls also find themselves in the top twenty five, as they are ranked eighteenth among the ninety five teams competing in class 2A. They also have the highest rank among WCAC teams. Van Meter is ranked at number twenty one. Panorama also made the top forty, as the Panthers are sitting in the thirty eighth position.
The boys totaled 132 points in last night's meet, edging out Van Meter which tallied 126. The winner wasn't determined until the final event--the1600 meter relay. Although Van Meter placed second in the event, the Chargers managed a fourth place finish to hold the Bulldogs at bay.
The Chargers picked up a total of eight first place finishes--six in individual events and two in relay events. Cael Hoing won the gold in both of the throwing events when he put the shot 42'1.5" and threw the discus 148'6." Clayton Wardyn was also a double winner as he placed first in the 110 meter hurdles in :15.56, and in the high jump where he went 5'10". Trevin Suhr was also a double winner in the long distance races when he won the 1600 meter run in 4:48 and the 3200 meters in 10:34.93.
The relay events in which ACGC broke the tape were the 800 medley and the 1600 medley. Cayden Jensen led off the 800 medley with Brock Littler and Austin Kunkle running the second and third legs, and with Charlirlie Crawford on the anchor. The foursome were timed in 1:41.04.
Kunkle, Jensen, and Crawford were the first three runners in the 1600 medley with Trevin Suhr running the final leg. They took the top spot in 3:58.
The Charger girls claimed seven first places--four in individual running events, two in relay events, and in one field event. The girls tallied a total of 111 points, eighteen points less than meet winner Mt. Ayr.
Chloe Largent continued her dominance in the high jump when she claimed first place with a jump of 5'10." Jorja Hoover won the gold in the 800 meters when she ran it in 2:38, and Rylie Sloss claimed first in the 1500 and 3000 meter runs. The Charger senior ran the former in 5:32 and the latter in 11:52.66. EmmaKay McClain was also an individual winner, as she won the 400 meter hurdles in 1:14.14.
The 4X800 relay and the 1600 medley relay were also first place finishers for the Chargers. McClain led off the 4X800 with Hayden Coffman and Kiersten Knobbe running second and third and Sophie Danker running the anchor. Their winning time was 11:55.03.
The medley team ran the event in 4:51 with Isabelle Policky leading off. Anaston Benson ran second, Jorja Hoover third, and "reliable Rylee" Sloss anchored.
ACGC girls' coach Colin Shawgo had a busy day, as he went to the Drake Relays where Largent competed in the high jump, placing eleventh among the competitors. Regarding Largent's experience at Drake, Shawgo offered these remarks. "Chloe did not end up getting a personal best at Drake, and she was disappointed about that, but getting eleventh at Drake is still a great accomplishment."
Following Largent's Drake experience Shawgo drove to Stuart to see his team turn in a good performance. "We had a good showing at this meet, finishing second to a very solid Mount Ayr team. Overall we did a good job of competing in poor weather, and we coaches wee pumped to see the competitive spirit from our athletes."
