Three Charger Grapplers Place at Corning Event

Updated: Jan 25, 2021

A small squad of six Charger wrestlers participated in the Jack Harris Tournament in Corning on Friday and Saturday, with three of the six earning places in the two day event.

Tegan Slaybaugh (30-6) reached the thirty win mark with a runner up finish at 106 lb. He won by fall over Justin Dorale of Missouri Valley in 1:19 and followed that up with two decisions on the way to the title match where he was decisioned by Eli Becerra of Missouri Vally, 11-4, and came home with the silver.

Cale Rowley (24-5) wrestled six times over the two days, winning three matches and also losing three on his way to a fourth place finish. After winning his first match, he then lost two quarterfinal matches to Jevin Christiansen of Nodaway Valley. He bounced back to win two consolation round matches before facing Christensen AGAIN! Unfortunately the result was the same, with Christensen winning by fall in 5:16. A remarkably busy day for Rowley!

Cristian Nolte (25-9) was nearly a busy, as he wrestled five times en route to his fourth place finish at 170 lb. Nolte's first four matches were all won or lost by fall, which included a quarterfinal win over Jake Cox of Bedford who Nolte pinned in 2:35. After losing in the semifinals, Nolte bounced back to throw Cole Binning of Clarke. That set the stage for a rematch with Cox in the battle for third place. This time Cox held the upper hand and won a major decision by a 19-11 score.

Dawson Muller, Cayden Jensen, and Bryce Rochholz also made the trip to Corning and were eliminated after first round losses.

"Tegan Slaybaugh had an outstanding performance Friday night, " Charger coach Shawn Danker said following the meet. "His win over the number four rated wrestler from Mt. Ayr put him in the the finals where he had a tough loss to the number two ranked wrestler from Missouri Valley.

"Senior Christian Nolte had a fourth place finish and a great tournament. It was his first time at this tournament and he did very, very well. Gunnar and Seth are taking care of some minor injuries and are hoping to be ready to go for the Charger Invitational."

This week is a quiet one for the Chargers, as their only competition will be at the Charger Invitational which the team will host on Saturday. First matches are scheduled to begin at 8 AM according to the ACGC activities website.
