Charger Girls Lose Opener to Audubon, 52-50, But They Did Not Fail

November 21, 2017

Highly successful college and professional basketball coach Larry Brown has been quoted as saying, "Failure does not come from losing, but from not trying."  So it was for the ACGC girls' basketball team as they lost a heartbreaker to Audubon last night, 52-50.  Yes, the Chargers lost, but it certainly was not for lack of effort.

Trailing by a 31-20 score at halftime, the Chargers put together an eighteen point third quarter to close the gap to one point, 39-38.  The Wheelers answered with a rally of their own in the first half of the fourth quarter and took a 48-40 lead with three minutes remaining in the game.  At that point things looked pretty bleak for ACGC when coach Aaron Dose put on a panic press that proved fruitful and with a minute to go the Chargers were down by a 48-46 score, but could get no closer than two points after that.

It was a difficult loss to take, given how close the Chargers came to capturing the victory and how tenacious they were on the offensive glass. The Chargers tallied 40 offensive rebounds during the contest--an almost unheard of number.  (To give the reader an idea of how remarkable that number is:  West Central Valley was the leading offensive rebounding team in the WCAC  last year, and its highest single game total was 23!)  Last night this observer counted seven shots on one possession resulting from that tenacity on the boards.  Alas, non of the seven shots resulted in a score.

Another statistic that is also quite remarkable is the number of shots that the Chargers put up, many of them resulting from some of those forty offensive rebounds.  ACGC put up ninety shots last night!!  Ninety!!!  In a thirty two minute game that is nearly three shots per minute.  (The Iowa State women took sixty shots in a recent game that is eight minutes longer than a high school game.)  Unfortunately for the Chargers, only nineteen of those ninety shots hit the bottom of the net for a disappointing 21%.

Coach Dose recognized the value of his team's rebounding strength when he said, "I was very impressed with our offensive rebounding and defensive intensity last night."  He added that he is counting on more offensive efficiency as the season progresses.  The Chargers were guilty of twenty four turnovers during the contest.

Sierra O'Brien led the Charger scoring with 15 points, while Morgan Meachem also hit double figures with 12 points and Maddy Smith netted 8.  Meachem had a monster game on the boards, as she hauled down 18 rebounds with 11 of them being on the offensive glass.  Savana Fuller added 8 rebounds for the Chargers.  Fuller, O'Brien, and Olivia Laabs each had six steals for ACGC.

The Chargers will next face IKM-Manning on Monday, November 27 in a "pride scrimmage" on the local hard court beginning at 6 PM.  On the next night, Tuesday the 28th, conference play beings with Madrid coming to town.  The Charger boys will also play on both of those nights.
