Charger Girls, Boys BB Teams Fall on the Road at Ogden

December 2, 2017

It was a rough road trip for the ACGC basketball teams last night, as both the girls and boys Chargers lost at Ogden.  In both cases the Ogden teams opened the games with hot shooting that the Chargers were never quite able to overcome.  In the girls game the Bulldogs made 17 free throws in the first half, including 11 successes out of their first 12 attempts en route to a 54-42 win.  For the Ogden boys, it was the three point shooting of Kayden Kruse that propelled the Bulldogs to a 21-11 first quarter lead and an eventual 65-56 win.  Kruse hit four treys in the first quarter and finished the half with 24 points. (He had just a single point after halftime.)

The Charger girls led early in their contest at 5 to 1 with Sierra O'Brien netting those five points on a three pointer and a two point goal.  But the tables then turned, as an ACGC scoring drought of over four minutes resulted in a 12-5 Ogden lead.  ACGC never really recovered from that cold shooting spell.

Ogden expanded its first quarter lead of 14-8 to 32-19 by halftime.  Still in the game at that point, the Chargers failed to score for over two minutes to begin the second half while Ogden increased its lead to twenty points at 39-19. Jadeyn Carrick ended the dry spell when she hit a three pointer.  The rest of the third stanza saw the Bulldogs maintain that twenty point lead.

The Chargers battled back in the fourth frame, holding the Bulldogs to four points while netting twelve themselves for a final score of 54-42.  Shooting was somewhat improved for the local cagers, as they hit on 15 of 56 shots for 27%.  The Chargers actually made one more field goal than the Bulldogs, but were outscored by Ogden 21-8 at the free throw line.

Charger head coach Aaron Dose offered these comments after the game:  "I was happy with the press break improvement and it was good to see Jadeyn and Olivia (Laabs) step up to score some points.  We have to improve finishing shots in the paint and at the free throw line."  The Chargers made only 8 of 20 free throw attempts.

Carrick recorded her first double double, as she netted 11 points and had a whopping 14 rebounds, including 11 on the offensive glass.  O'Brien was next with 9 points and Laabs had 6.

Laabs and Lauren Embleton each had 3 assists, while Laabs had 5 steals.

On the boys' side, the Chargers had no answer for Kruse's three point barrage in the first quarter.  Leading by a point, 9-8, nearing the halfway pint of quarter number one, the Chargers saw Kruse hit three consecutive treys to put the Bulldogs in front for good at 17-9. Ogden increased it's lead to 21-11 at the end of the initial quarter.

ACGC had a run of its own to start the second quarter, as Collin Stowe opened the quarter with a basket in the paint and Bryce Littler scored five consecutive points.  That closed the margin to 22-18, and the Chargers stayed close throughout the quarter, trailing by only 35-32 at halftime. Playing what is arguably their best quarter of the season, Stowe led the charge with ten second quarter points.

While the second quarter may have been one of the best of the season, the third quarter was a disaster for the Chargers, as they netted only six points and saw the Bulldogs increase their lead to 50-38.  Determined play by the  Chargers in the final stanza, including 10 points from Caden Wardyn enabled the team to close the gap to nine at the buzzer for the final of 65-56.

Although disappointed with the loss, coach Jake Mohling saw some positive things as well.  "I thought we improved, but we still have a ways to go. I'm glad we fought back at the end of each half, but we have to find ways to shorten the other team's runs.  Their third quarter was too much and we have to identify shooters more quickly.  I was really pleased with Stowe and Wardyn.  I thought this was one of their best games and hopefully they can continue that confident and aggressive play next week."

Wardyn and Stowe each scored in double figures, with 17 and 16 points respectively.  Wardyn was the top rebounder with 8, while Stowe and Quynton Younker each had 7 rebounds.  As a team the boys shot 34% from the field, making 18 of 53 shots and 73% on free throws with 16 makes out of 22 attempts.

The season record for the girls falls to 0-3 (0-2 WCAC) with the loss, and the boys are at 0-2, with both losses coming in conference play.  The Charger teams will see a lot of home court action next week, with three games on tap.  Tuesday West Central Valley comes to town, followed by Glidden-Ralston on Thursday and Panorama on Saturday.  Tip off time for the girls' games is 6 PM on Tuesday and Thursday, with an earlier tipoff of 5 PM on Saturday.   Boys action will follow the girls' games.  There are preliminary games each day as well, with the JV boys playing at 4:30 on Tuesday, and the freshman girls playing at 4:30 on Thursday and 3:30 on Saturday.
