ACGC athletic director Jake Mohling has announced a new football coach for the Chargers with the hiring of Cody Matthewson. Matthewson has been coaching and teaching at Truman High School in Independence, Missouri and will be returning to his home state of Iowa. He grew up in Madrid, graduating from Madrid High School in 2009. As a senior on the Tiger football team Matthewson rushed for over 2000 yards in the vaunted Madrid wishbone offense. He earned his college degree at Northwest Missouri State University where he continued his football career on the defensive side of the ball. He was a member of the 2013 NWMS NCAA Division Two national championship team.
Matthewson seemed enthusiastic about his new responsibilities when he tweeted, "I am excited for this new chapter in my life and also to return back to the great state of Iowa. I look forward to beginning this new era in Charger football and bringing back the successful culture from Adair-Casey and Guthrie Center. Can't wait to get started and hit the ground running."
Mattewson replaces Mark McDermott who resigned last fall after four years at the helm of Guthrie Center and ACGC football.
