One Track Meet Cancelled, So Chargers Find Another at Van Meter

April 6, 2018

Last night's scheduled track meet was to be hosted by CRB on the ACGC track, but was cancelled by CRB on Wednesday.  With an open date, Charger coaches Colin Shawgo and Tyler Mosbach were resourceful in locating a meet that would take late entries.  Both Charger teams headed for Van Meter yesterday for what as billed as the "Van Meter Last Minute Invitational."  No team scores were kept and there was no field event competition, but the thinclads had an opportunity to run in what were the best weather conditions of the young season.  Other schools competing were ADM, CAM, Madrid, Ogden, Panorama, Pleasantville, host Van Meter, and the Van Meter JV.

The Charger girls managed three first place finishes, with Kate Crawford capturing the 1500 meter run in 5:12.88, and Emma Swanson winning the 3000 meter run in 11:34.18.  The distance medley relay also took top honors in a time of 4:36.09.  Runners included Mady Smith, Sara Schmeling, Savana Fuller, and Kate Crawford.   ACGC had no second place finishes.

On the boys side, Dylan Sopes won the 200 meters in 24.1 for first place and Clay Billheimer also took the gold in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:04.67.  Second place finishes went to Caden Wardyn in the 200 meters with a time of 24.41, Noah Nelson in the 1600 meter run (4:49.38), Nelson in the 3200 meters (10:01.22), and the 1600 meter relay team consisting of Caden Waryn, Quenton Spack, Clay Billheimer, and Carter Schildberg (3:42.00).

Boys' coach Tyler Mosbach offered these comments following the meet.  "Thursday's meet was competition in its truest sense.  There were no medals to be won, There was no team title to take. The only reward was knowing you did your best, got better, and got to run against other teams.

"At first it seemed like the guys were going to have the attitude that if we can't win anything, why try," he said.  "It took the gun to off once for that to quickly change.  I couldn't be happier with the way they performed on the track.  One shining star was Noah Nelson in the 3200.  He broke not only the only ACGC school record, but the former records for both GC and AC.  Honestly though, he will likely do that again several times this season.  We also had ACGC records set by Gabe Rowley in the 400 hurdles and by the 4x400 team consisting of Caden Wardyn, Quenton Spack, Clay Billheimer, and Carter Schildberg.  Unfortunately, as this was a last second meet put together by Van Meter, the field events did not have the opportunity to compete.  We look forward to getting them out again."

Next week , both teams will travel to Earlham on Tuesday (weather permitting), and the girls are scheduled to compete on the local track on Thursday.

ACGC results from yesterday were as follows.  Had their been team scoring, the top eight places would have been awarded points.
