Charger Track Teams Finish Fourth at Earlham; Crawford Sets Record in 3000 Meter Run

April 13, 2018

The Charger track teams traveled to Earlham last night for what turned out to be a "mini conference meet", as seven of the WCAC schools were at the fourteen team meet.  The competition was fierce, but the Chargers fared well, finishing fourth in both girls' and boys' meets with near identical scores.  The girls scored 91 points while the boys racked up a total of 92.  A strong Panorama girls team won the meet with a total of 163 points, while Madrid took the top spot for the boys with 115 points.

ACGC came home with six golds, two for the girls and 4 on the boys' side.  Mady McDermott won the shot put with a distance of 35'2" and Kate Crawford took the 3000 meter run in a meet and stadium record of 10:45.24.  Caden Wardyn and Noah Nelson both captured the top prize, with Nelson winning the 1500 meter run in 4:45.78 and Wardyn taking first in the long jump with a leap of 20'3.5".

The boys also won two relay events as the team of Cole Boyer, Gabe Rowley, Caden Wardyn, and Clay Billheimer won the shuttle hurdle relay in 1:05.61.  When Wardyn began the third leg, he was in third place.  The veteran senior took the lead as he approached the final hurdle when he hit the hurdle and went to the ground.  He finished his leg and anchor Grady Laabs regained the lead and came across the finish line in first place in what was one of the more dramatic races of the night.

The second relay team to win was the 1600 medley relay consisting of Dylan Soper, Quenton Spack, Wardyn, and Billheimer.  They ran the event in 3:57.51.

Boys' coach Tyler Mosbach had mixed feelings about the day.  "Earlham's meet was one of those meets where there was some stuff to be excited about and other things that left you scratching your head.  One could describe it as a very sloppy meet.  The positive side to that, although it was sloppy, there were still 16 seasons' bests by the boys.  That just shows how much this team is capable of with truly clean meet.  The first time they put it all together, they will see some big things."

The girls' team will see action again this week when they will host a meet on the Gonzales-Parrish track on Thursday.  Next Monday both teams will compete, with the girls at Bondurant-Farrar and the boys at Jefferson.
