It could not have been any closer. It was a meet full of "cuolda, woulda, shouldas", as the ACGC Charger girls fell just short of capturing the team title in its own Charger Relays last night. A few more inches here, a little faster time there and the meet may have come out differently. As it was, it came down to the final event with the Chargers leading rival Panorama 149-143 going into the 1600 meter relay. With the Panthers finishing second and the Chargers sixth in the finale, it meant Panorama edged out ACGC 153-152 and went home with the top prize. Despite the narrow loss, the Chargers turned in an outstanding performance as a team, and some sterling performances by individuals.
Mady McDermott led the Charger gold medal winners, as she broke three records with her best put of 38'5". The meet record of 37'6", the four-decade-old Guthrie Center school record, and the-three-decade old Adair-Casey school record all fell with McDermotts' effort.
Emma Swanson also captured a gold with her win in the 3000 meter run with a time of 11:36.78. The 1600 medley relay team of Reagan Rumelhart, Emma Swanson, and Kate Crawford was also a winner with a time of 4:37.11. Rounding out the gold medalists was Crawford in the 1500 as she posted a time of 5:16.68.
When a team scores 152 points in a meet, it takes more that the top finishers to amass that many points. McDermott added a second place in the discus; Savana Fuller claimed second place in both the 100 and 200 meter dashes; Mady Smith finished second in the 100 hurdles and third in the 100 meter dash; Sara Schmeling took thirds in the 200, 400, and the long jump; Lauryn Embleton took second place in the 3000 meter run and fifth in the 800; Crawford added a second in the 800. Many other Chargers contributed to the 152 point total, with their finishes listed below. All in all, it was a great effort by the entire team.
Coach Shawgo was in good spirits following the meet. "I would say that the biggest takeaways from the night are that we scored a season high in points, the girls fought like crazy and came up just short as a team, and that we as a coaching staff love seeing the tremendous growth night in and night out from these girls," the Charger mentor commented.
Following the weekend break, the girls will be back in action on Monday when they travel to Bondurant. The boys' team will also be in action on Monday at Jefferson.
First places finishes are italicisized. DNP stand for "did not place", and Also refers to those who participated in an event, but were not eligible to score. Only two participants from each school are eligible to score in any given event.
