Charger Track Teams Mine for Precious Metals at WCV Meet; Billheimer Claims Three Titles

April 20, 2018

It may have been a cool evening for a track meet, but the ACGC track teams were hot as the girls' and boys' teams finished first and second respectively at the WCV Wildcat Relays in Stuart.

The Charger girls racked up 169 points to claim the team victory, while the boys' fell just short with 144 points compared to Van Meter's 148.

First and second place finished abounded for both teams, as the girls claimed seventeen gold or silver medals, with the boys coming home with twelve.  Kate Crawford won two golds as she took the top spot in the 1500, and 3000 meter runs. Others wining individual golds for the girls were Mady McDermott in the discus, Sara Schmeling in the long jump, and Audrey Stowe in the 800 meter run.

The Charger boys dominated the distance events as Clay BillHeimer won the 400, 800, and 1600 meters.  After winning the 3200 meter run, Noah Nelson proceeded to finish second to Billheimer in both the 800 and 1600 meter runs.  Other gold medal winners were Caden Wardyn in the long jump and Dylan Soper in the 100 meter dash.

Among second place finishers for the girls was McDermott in the shot put, where she and Grace Dupuy of WCV continue their season-long battle for dominance in both the shot put and discus throw.  Other silver medal winners were Savana Fuller silver in the 100 meter dash, Sara Schmeling in the 400 meter dash, Emma Swanson in 800 and 3000 meter runs, Lauryn Embleton in the 1500 meters, and Mady Smith in the 100 m hurdles,

Boys who claimed second place finishes were Soper in the 200 meters, Wardyn in the 400 meters, and Gabe Rowley in the 400 meter hurdles,

Several girls' relay teams also finished in the top two, including winers in the girls' 400 and 800 relays and the 1600 medley relay, and second place finishes in the 1600 and 3200 meter relays. The boys hurdle relay team also picked up a silver.

Girls' coach Colin Shawgo was justifiably pleased with his team's performance.  "It was a great night for our girls.  A first place finish and once again a lot o growth.  We were able to take care of business, which was nice.  Kate Crawford's time in the 3000 puts her twelfth among all classes in the state which will most likely qualify her for the Drake Relays."

Next action for the Charger thinclads will be next Tuesday, April 24 when both teams will travel to Audubon.
