Crawford Claims Fourth in 1500 Meter Run; Several Near Misses in Other Events on Final Day of State Coed Track Meet

May 20, 2018

The final day of the state track meet today found three Charger athletes competing in four different events, with sophomore distance runner Kate Crawford placing fourth in the 1500 meter run, while Crawford, Clay Billheimrer, and Noah Nelson all turned in good performances but fell just short of placing in other events.

Crawford's performance in the 1500 was such that she cut twelve seconds from her qualifying time of 5:01.20, giving her a time of 4:49.71 in the state finals.  She was running third behind the Hostetler sisters of Mid Prairie-Wellman when she was edged out at the finish by Sophia Jungling of Aplington-Parkersburg to finish in the fourth spot.

Earlier in the day she had run a respectable 2:23.68 in the 800 meters, only to finish in tenth place, with eighth being the final place for which team points were awarded.

Billheimer and Nelson ran in both the 800 and 1600 meters.  Billheimer broke the two minute mark in the 800, as he posted a time of 1:59.41 which earned him tenth place among the twenty four finalists.  Nelson may have been saving himself for the 1600, as he finished twenty fourth with a time of 2:05.14.  He had previously broken the two minute barrier.

In the 1600 meter run, Nelson gave it a go and ran it in 4:38.41, earning him tenth place overall. Billheimer ran the race in 4:42.33, good for seventeenth place.

For the entire state meet the boys tallied six team points, all on day one, placing them in thirty seventh place among the fifty teams which scored.  The Charger girls tallied a total of sixteen points, good for seventeenth place among fifty teams.

The track and field seasons for both teams and for Charger fans as well was a rewarding experience, with a good job of coaching by head coaches Colin Shawgo, Tyler Mosbach and their respective coaching staffs.
