Baseball Team Drops a Pair of Conference Games to Madrid, 17-0 and 11-2

June 2, 2018

The ACGC baseball team found the going pretty rough against Madrid Thursday night, as the Tigers swept a doubleheader from the Chargers, 17-0 and 11-2, on the Charger home field.

After a scoreless first inning in game one, Madrid took a 3-0 lead after the second frame and then erupted for ten runs in the top of the third.  A four run fourth inning by the Tigers gave the visitors a 17-0 lead, ending the game after a scoreless fifth inning.

Will Byars had the lone hit for the Chargers, a single in the second inning.  Owen Hansen was the only other ACGC baserunner when he coaxed a walk in the third inning.

Freshman Clayton Wardyn started on the mound for the Chargers and went three innings, giving up eight runs on six hits, while striking out two and walking four.  McKlain Jorgenson pitched the fourth inning and surrendered five hits, resulting in four runs.  He walked one and struck out one batter.  Garrett Walhovd pitched the final inning, giving up five runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one.

In game two the Chargers struck first, scoring two runs in the first inning, on three consecutive hits.  With two outs, Bryce Littler singled and scored on a double by Ben Kingery.  Byars then doubled to score Kingery and the Chargers were on the board.  However, they could only muster one addition hit for the game., a single by Kingery.  Madrid responded with five runs in its half of the first inning, and added runs in the next three innings to make the score 11-2.

Bryce Littler pitched into the third inning, giving up nine runs on only one hit, while issuing five bases on balls.  He struck out two Madrid batters.  Shaky fielding resulted in only four of the nine runs being earned.  Nathan Schiller pitched the last three and two thirds innings.  He gave up two runs on four hits, walked three and struck out one.

The loss drops the season record to 0-5 for the locals, including a 0-4 mark in conference play.
