Chargers BB Hangs Tough, But Falls to Panthers, 11-8

June 5, 2018

The ACGC baseball team played competitive ball last night, leading as late as the sixth inning, before falling to Panorama, 11-8, in a game played in Panora.

The Chargers stuck first, scoring two runs in the second inning when Will Byars walked and Owen Hansen bunted Byars to second.  Byars rounded second too far and got caught in a rundown and was tagged out.  With Hansen on first, Garrett Walhovd singled to put runners at the corners.  An infield hit by Logan Brinks scored Hansen from third and moved Walhovd to second.  Nathan Shiller was hit by a pith to load the bases.  Bryce Litter earned a base on balls and the Chargers scored their second run of the inning..

That 2-0 lead held up until the Panorama at bat in the bottom of the third when the Panthers netted three runs on five hits.  The score stood at 3-2 until the Chargers tied it up in the top of the fifth when two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases.  Byars sacrifice fly scored Bryce Littler from third to knot the score at three apiece.

The Panthers went ahead 6-3 with a three spot in the bottom of the fifth, only to see the Chargers tie it up in the top of the sixth with three runs of their own.  Schiller walked with one out, Quenton Spack was hit by pitch, Littler came through with a single to center to drive in Schiller.  Caden Wardyn also singled to drive in a run to make it 6-5.  With the bases loaded, Byars was hit by pitch to earn an RBI and the game was knotted at 6-6 through six innings.

Lady Luck did not stay with the Chargers, as the Panthers erupted for five runs in their at bat in the sixth inning.  Three costly Charger errors in the inning allowed Panorama to score five unearned runs to take an 11-6 lead.

The Chargers had just enough in the tank to give it one more go in the top of the seventh inning.  With two outs, pinch hitter Avery Wheatley drew a base on balls.  Spack reached safely on a Panther error, and Littler walked to load the bases.  Avery scored from third on a wild pitch and Caden Wardyn singled to score Spack to make it an 11-8 ball game.  After Ben Kingery singled to load the bases once again, Byars flew out to center filed to end the game.

Despite the loss, the Chargers were battling to the end and stayed competitive throughout the game.  With the loss, the season record fell to 0-7, with Woodward-Granger coming to town tonight for a game scheduled to begin at 6:30.
