Missouri Valley Ends Charger Baseball Season, 17-5

July 9, 2018

An encouraging start for the Charger baseball team in its district tournament opener on Saturday quickly turned into something less desirable, as the Chargers were eliminated from tourney play, 17-5, by Missouri Valley on the Big Reds' home field.

After Mo. Valley scored a single run in the bottom of the first inning, ACGC responded with a four run second inning and added a run in the third to take a 5-1 lead.  A walk to Quenton Spack, an infield hit by Owen Hansen, an RBI double by Ben Kingery, and RBI singles by Nathan Schiller and Garrett Walhovd resulted in four runs for the Chargers in its second at bat.  They added a run in the third inning when Spack reached safely on a fielder's choice, stole second base, and scored when Kingery reached first base safely on a Big Reds' error.

And then the roof caved in!  Mo. Valley sent eleven batters to the plate in the third inning and scored eight runs to take a 9-5 lead it would not relinquish.  Five Big Reds hits, a Charger error, two walks, and a batter hit by pitch made up the big inning for Mo. Valley.

To make matters worse for ACGC was the fact that the Charger bats were quieted the rest of the way, as they recorded only two hits for the remainder of the game.  Meanwhile, the host team added two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to take a 13-5 lead.  The game ended in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the sixth when Big Reds' catcher Conner Lang hit a grand slam home run to end the game by the ten run rule at 17-5.

Caden Wardyn had two hits for ACGC, with Walhovd, Spack, Hansen, Kingery, and Schiller each contributing one.  Kingery's double was the only Charger extra base hit.  Wardyn took the loss on the mound, as he gave up nine runs on five hits, while walking three and striking out five over 2 2/3 innings.  Logan Brincks worked the final 2 1/3 innings, surrendering eight runs on three hits .  He walked four and stuck out two.  Only six of the seventeen Mo. Valley runs were earned, as the Chargers were guilty of seven errors for the game.

The season ending loss gives the team a final record of 4 wins and 20 losses.  And so the "boys of summer" will hang up their cleats until next spring.  Six senior Chargers have played their last baseball game for the black and gold--Logan Brincks, Owen Hansen, Nathan Schiller, Quenton Spack, Garrett Walhovd, and Caden Wardyn have all ended their high school playing days.  Best wishes to all of them!
