Playing in front of what seemed like a home crowd, the ACGC volleyball team opened season and conference play with a sweep of West Central Valley in three sets, 25-20, 25-16, and 25-17 on the Wildcat home court. A great turnout by Charger fans and a student section that doubled that of the host school no doubt encouraged the local girls on the way to the win.
A mix of seasoned veterans and newcomers provided the Chargers with enough fire power to topple the Wildcats. ACGC was never really threatened by WCV, although the hosts came within three points at 23-20 in the first set before Savana Fuller's powerful kill took the wind out of the WCV sails and helped propel the Chargers to the first set win.
The second set was close early, with the Chargers leading by just a 10-9 margin before outscoring the Wildcats 15-7 the rest of the way. During that stretch ACGC scored five consecutive points to increase the lead to 15-9 and the Chargers were never threatened again.
The final set saw the Chargers race to a 22-9 lead before WCV rallied to closed the gap to 23-17. ACGC scored the final two points in the set the secure the 3-0 sweep.
Statistically, the Chargers had 25 kills for the match, with Chloe Largent leading the way with 15 kills in 23 attack attempts. Fuller and Olivia Laabs had 6 and 4 kills respectively. Audrey Stowe had all of the Charger assists, as she accumulated 20 on the night. Laabs led in digs with 5 while "G" Hoover aded 4. Laabs led in serving, as she was successful on 16 of 19 serves, with Largent going 6 for 7. Hoover led in ace serves with 6. No statistics on blocks were available at the time this article was posted.
Conference play continues tonight (Thursday), as the Chargers will entertain Van Meter. Freshman and junior varsity matches will precede the varsity match which is scheduled to begin at 7 PM.
