Charger Girls Open Conference Play With 50-42 Win Over Madrid

December 1, 2018

A hot start by the ACGC girls' basketball team propelled it to a 50-42 conference win last night over the Madrid Tigers in a game played on the Charger home court.  While ACGC went 6 for 9 from the floor in the first quarter, the Tigers made only one field goal in thirteen attempts, giving the home team a 13-2 advantage on the scoreboard.  Although Madrid made a run late in the game, the Chargers were never seriously threatened.

A three pointer by Kylie Young in the Chargers' second possession of the game set the tone in the early going.  ACGC rattled off 11 points before Madrid scored its lone field goal in the first quarter.  The Chargers' hot shooting continued throughout the half, as they shot 50% on 12 makes in 24 attempts that included three goals from beyond the arc.

The shooting cooled somewhat in the second half, as ACGC went 8 for 21 from the floor, but still managed to shoot 44% for the game.  Free throw shooting, on the other hand, was not a strong point last night as the locals converted on only 2 of 9 attempts.

An aggressive press was a factor in the game, with Madrid turning the ball over numerous times against the Charger pressure.  At the same time, ACGC did a reasonably good job in dealing with the Madrid press.  Bench scoring was another positive for the Chargers, with non-starters contributing 16 of the 50 points scored.  Madrid got no points from its non-starters.  The three ball was kind to the Chargers as well, with the team hitting a total of 8 treys.

Kylie Young was the lone Charger in double figures, as she finished with 14 points, including four three pointers.  Sister Kennedy netted 8 points and "G" Hoover added 7.  Sierra O'Brien came off the bench to hit two treys.  Nine Chargers entered the scoring column.  Kennedy Young led the team in rebounds with 7, with Savana Fuller and Kylie Young each pulling down 6.  Kennedy Young also led in assists with 4.

The win moves the season record to 2-0 (1-0, WCAC), with a busy week coming up.  On Monday the team will travel to Faith Baptist College in Ankeny to face Grandview Christian.  A junior varsity game at 6 PM will preceed the varsity tilt.  Tuesday the Chargers will entertain Des Moines Christian and Friday the team will travel to Ogden.  The latter two games will both be girls'/boys' doubleheaders.  Preliminary freshman games (4:30) are also scheduled on Tuesday and Friday.
