Charger Girls Go to 3-0 on the Season With Win over GVC, 64-30; DMC Next

December 4, 2018

According to sports aficionados (experts who are very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about an activity, subject, or pastime--from Oxford Dictionary.  By the way, you and I both qualify as aficionados, since I am writing this and you are reading it!), an athletic team is said to reach its potential when it wins all of the contests it should.  So, has the ACGC girls' basketball team reached its potential?  Having defeated three teams that they should have defeated, the answer would appear to by yes.  Last night's 64-30 route of Grand View Christian at Faith Baptist College would add credence to the notion that the Charger team is at least getting closer to reaching its potential.

However, two factors would seem to indicate that the Chargers aren't quite there yet.  First, the season is young with only three games played.  Second, there are other games on the schedule that are "should wins."  Perhaps the determination of whether or not the team has reached its potential can't be determined until the season is completed.  In addition, improvement in several areas of the game will need to happen before we can say definitively that this team has reached its potential.  Still, sitting at 3-0 on the season feels pretty darn good!

GVC offered little competition for the Chargers, with only one player who was much of an offensive threat.  The Thunder led once in the game at 2-0 in the first minute of play.  By the end of the first quarter the Chargers led 18-11.  It was all Chargers after that.  The lead grew to a dozen at 29-17 by halftime and a 35 point second half enabled the Chargers to pass the 60 point mark for the first time this season.

Ten girls entered the scoring column last night for the Chargers, with Chloe Largent and Jorja Hoover scoring in double figures at 15 and 10 points respectively.  Sierra O'Brien was next with 8, while Kylie Young and Jadeyn Carrick each netted 7.  As a team, the Chargers hit 21 of 52 shots from the floor for 40%,  including 3 of 12 from beyond the arc.  The girls continue to struggle from the free throw line, as the team made only 13 of 26.

The team hauled down twenty five offensive rebounds and twenty of the defensive variety.  Jorja Hoover was credited with 9 boards and Kennedy Young 6.  Hoover led the team in assists with 5.  A bright spot was a decrease in the number of turnovers.  The Chargers had 13 turnovers for the

game--a season low.

With a 3-0 record (1-0 WCAC), things now become more challenging for the Chargers, starting with tonight's tilt with perennial power Des Moines Christian.   A girls' junior varsity game at 4:30 will precede the girls' and boys' varsity games.  Go Chargers!
