Ferocious Felines Foil Charger Comeback; ACGC Falls to DMC, 79-63

December 5, 2018

A sixteen point win is usually an indication that the winning team has dominated the game, but that was not the case last night when the ACGC boys fell to Des Moines Christian by a score of 79-63.  The Chargers were within eight points in the fourth quarter, but the Lions put thirty points on the scoreboard in the final eight minutes to seal the win.

The game was likely decided during the second quarter when the Chargers experienced a scoring drought during which DMC went on a 13-0 run in the first three minutes of the quarter.  Noah Nelson stopped the bleeding when he hit a three pointer at the 4:45 mark of the quarter.  ACGC trailed by just a basket, 14-12, after the first eight minutes of play, but found themselves trailing 38-25 by intermission.

But the Chargers didn't fold, and closed the gap to eight points, 49-41, at the end of the third frame.  The home team relied on the long ball to narrow the gap, as they hit four treys--two by Noah Sargent and one each by Nelson and Bryce Litter.  Then DMC's Curran Ingram went to work, scoring 17 of his game high 25 point in the fourth period, enabling the Lions to stop the Charger comeback and secure the win for the Lions.

The shooting statistics for ACGC are somewhat unusual, as the Chargers made more three point baskets than they did two pointers.  The team was 12 of 25 from beyond the arc for 48%, and just 10-31 for 32% inside the the three point line.  Nelson led the individual scoring for ACGC with 16 points, while Noah Sargent and Lucas Marsh also hit double figures with 14 and 11 points respectively.  Littler just missed hitting double figures, as he scored 9 points.  Sargent led the team in rebounds with 8, while Littler had 5 assists.  Nineteen Charger turnovers resulted in twenty six points for the Lions.

Although it was a loss, it indicated to this writer that the Chargers can compete and will grab several wins along the way.  Hopefully the first will be on Friday when the team travels to Ogden to face the Bulldogs.  The boys' game time is scheduled for 7:30, following the girls' game.  Go Chargers!
