No Deja Vu for Charger Girls, Fall in OT to Earlham, 64-56

December 12, 2018

Maybe it was too much to ask.  That is, to win consecutive games with a fourth quarter comeback and an overtime victory.  For the second consecutive game the ACGC girls came from behind to tie the game at the end of regulation and force an overtime.  But the second time didn't have the same ending as the first, as the Chargers fell to Earlham last night, 64-56, in OT.

Last Friday the Chargers roared back from an eleven point deficit in the fourth quarter at Ogden to knot the game and throw it into OT where the Chargers dominated to take home the victory, 46-41.  Last night's fourth quarter comeback was even more dramatic, as it started with the Chargers facing an eight point deficit with under two minutes remaining on the clock.

Trailing by a 48-40 score with 1:56 showing on the scoreboard, Jorja Hoover made one of two free throws to narrow the deficit to seven points. Then Jadeyn Carrick went to work.  The veteran senior scored three consecutive baskets in just over a minute to narrow the gap to 50-47.  With just over thirty seconds remaining in regulation, Kylie Young scored her only field goal of the night to make it 50-49.  A two point basket by Ogden's Katie Noah made it 52-49 Bulldogs.  Fifteen seconds left!  Somehow Carrick found herself open in the right corner and nailed a three pointer with three ticks left on the clock to tie the game at 52 apiece.  OVERTIME!  Pandemonium on the ACGC side!  Carrick had scored nine points in the last 1:50 of regulation to tie it up.

But alas the overtime period wasn't what Charger fans hoped for.  The deja vu experience ended only partially complete.  Ogden took control, scoring the first five points in the extra period.  ACGC got within three points at 57-54 after another Carrick basket. But the Bulldogs iced it with free throws down the stretch.

A tough loss for the players and their fans to take.  A win would have meant a fifth victory in six games, but it was not to be.  However, there is a silver lining--the girls are competitive, with more victories in store for the '18-'19 Chargers.  Still many winnable games on the schedule.  Go Chargers!

Coach Dan Baker's analysis was mixed when he said, "I am very proud of the effort we gave to come back, but would like to see us play hard enough in the beginning to not be in that situation.  Jadeyn obviously gave us a good effort at the offensive end, but needs to give the same effort at the defensive end.  I am impressed with the way Jorja Hoover is handling the ball and running the team.  She continues to improve with every game.  I want us to toughen up a bit and continue to learn to compete.  We will show up for two tough games this week and look to get back to playing with confidence."

Carrick's fourth quarter heroics enabled her to score a career high 26 points, making 8 of 12 shots with the same numbers at the charity stripe.  Jorja Hoover also scored in double figures with 10 points and led the team in rebounds with six and in assists with three.  The team came up with 16 steals, with Hoover also leading that category with 4.  As a team, the Chargers made 18 of 52 field goal attempts for 35%, with just 4 of 17 successful attempts from behind the arc.  Free throws were better with 16 makes out of 26 tries for 62%.

The girls get little rest between games as there are two more this week.  On Thursday the Chargers will travel to face Glidden-Ralston, a team that was 4-0 going into its game last night at Boyer Valley.  Friday the Chargers will return home for a contest with Panorama.
