Charger Cagers Crush G-R, 70-28; Losing Streak is History

December 14, 2018

About a year ago at this time the ACGC boys' basketball team put together a three game winning streak, including a dramatic 66-64 win over Glidden-Ralston.  The hope for a successful season soared among Charger fans.  But that three game win streak was going to be the last of the victories for the 2017-18 season, as the Chargers lost seventeen consecutive game, with only one of those losses by less than ten points.  The current season began with four additional defeats to run the streak to twenty one.  But the futility came to an end last night when the Charger boys whipped the winless Wildcats, 70-28, on the G-R home floor.

The outcome was in doubt for only the first two and a half minutes, as the Chargers broke away from an early 4-4 tie with a twelve point run to take a 16-4 lead it would never relinquish.  Four different players scored during the run that included three pointers by Eli Kading and Noah Sargent.  ACGC put together two consecutive twenty one point quarters in the first half for a 42-17 lead at the intermission.  The Chargers shot well for the half, connecting on 14 of 28 attempts from the floor for 50%, and 11 of 16 free throws for 69%.

The second half was more of the same for the Chargers, with Bryce Littler hitting two treys to open the third quarter which ended with the local boys leading, 59-23.  Coach Lance Kading was able to clear the bench in the second half, with non-starters seeing much of the action.

Two Chargers scored in double figures, with Littler spitting the nets for 18 points and Noah Sargent scoring 10.   Eli Kading and Quynton Younker each netted 8 and Noah Nelson and Lucas March each had 6.  Sargent led the team in rebounds with 7, with four additional players each having 4 boards.  Marsh led the team in assists with 6 and Nelson contributed 4.  Nelson also led in steals with 4.  The team shot a respectable 44% from the field, converting on 24 of 54 attempts that included 6 makes out of 23 tries from beyond the arc.

The victory improves the season record to 1-4 (0-4, WCAC) with little time to relish the win, as Panorama comes to town tonight for a conference clash.  The girls game is scheduled for 6 PM with the boys contest to follow.
