Can We Replay the Second Half? Charger Boys Halftime Lead Disappears, Lose to Ogden, 81-50

January 16, 2019

After playing some of its best basketball of the season in the first half last night, the ACGC boys saw a remarkable second half scoring display by Ogden's Ben Heeren as the Bulldogs defeated the Chargers on the Chargers' home floor, 81-50.  Heeren tallied thirty second half points to help erase a 29-25 ACGC halftime lead.

Holding the Bulldogs to 35% shooting in the first half while making twelve of their own twenty four shots, the Chargers looked as if they were going to challenge the Bulldogs.  With the Bulldogs leading 16-9 late in the first quarter, Noah Sargent hit two three balls to close the gap to an 18-15 deficit after the first eight minutes.

The second frame was the best of the night for the Chargers, as ACGC held Ogden to just seven second quarter points while netting fourteen of its own.  Five different Chargers--Quynton Younker, Bryce Littler, Will Byars, Eli Kading, and Sargent--scored in the productive quarter to give the locals their four point halftime lead.

But the lead was short lived.  After the halftime intermission, Heeren and the Bulldogs came out firing.  Kayden Kruse got things started with the first points of the second half, and then Heeren began his rampage, scoring seven consecutive Bulldog points, and all of a sudden it was 34-31 in Ogden's favor less than two minutes into the third quarter.  While Heeren was putting on a one man show, ACGC went three minutes without scoring ending any challenge from the Chargers.

A tenacious full court press by the Bulldogs added to ACGC's woes, as the Chargers turned the ball over numerous times leading to Bulldogs baskets.  Heeren continued his explosion and finished the third quarter with eighteen of his team's thirty three third quarter points as Ogden took control of the game, 58-39.

Charger reserves played much of the fourth quarter, while Heeren continued to pile up the points for Ogden.  The all-stater netted an additional twelve fourth quarter points including a thunderous dunk with two minutes remaining in the game. It was quite a display by the 6'6" senior, and was really the story of the game.

Littler and "Q" led the Charger scoring with 11 and 10 points respectively, while Sargent netted 8.  Eli Kading and Sargent led the Charger rebounding with 5 each, with Byars and Littler coming up with 4 apiece.  Littler led in assists with 3 and Noah Nelson had the same number of steals.  The Chargers shot a solid 63% inside the arc on 17 of 27 shooting, but made only 3 of 20 from beyond the arc.  Free throw shooting was a bright spot, with 6 makes out of 8 tries.  On the downside, 28 Charger turnovers led to 37 Bulldog points.

The loss is the fifth consecutive for the boys, dropping their season record to 4-10 and 2-9 in the WCAC.  The Chargers will next face Panorama on Thursday in Panora.  The game was moved from Friday because of an expected snowstorm on Friday.  Game time is scheduled for 7:30, following a 6 PM girls' game.
