Boys Track Takes Second at VM, Girls Finish Third; Nelson, Billheimer Sweep 400 Through 3200; Girls Pick Up Two Golds

April 5, 2019

It was a cool evening for a track meet, but the ACGC track teams performed well in their respective meets at Van Meter last night.  The Charger boys finished second to class 3A Adel-Desoto-Minburn, while the girls claimed third place behind Panorama and Van Meter.  Times and distances were generally a bit slower because of the cool weather, but that was not always the case.

The Charger girls picked up two first place finishes, while the boys came home with four golds.  Kate Crawford won the only individual first place for the girls when she won the 1500 meter run in 5:10.68.  The girls' 4x800 relay also won the top prize in 10:53.86.  Jorja Hoover led off, followed by Rylee Sloss, Audrey Stowe, with Lauryn Embleton on the anchor.

The boys' winners were Clay Billheimer in both the 400 and the 800.  His times were :54.76 and 2:03.21 respectively.  Fellow senior Noah Nelson was also a double winner, with victories in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs.  Nelson ran the 1600 in 4:48.78 and the 3200 in 9:58.02.

Neither Charger coach was one hundred percent satisfied with his team's performance.  Boys' coach Cody Mattewson said, "We had to have some adversity and rebound after a slow start.  We didn't perform well through the first quarter of the meet but turned it around and competed well towards the end.  It was nice to compete against  some bigger schools and show that we are a very competitive team this year."

Girls' coach Colin Shawgo expressed similar thoughts when he said, "I would say that yesterday's meet was overall very competitive for us.  We put girls in a multitude of new spots to see some new times, and they went out and competed very well.  Also, since it was our fourth meet in two weeks, we had a lot of tired legs, but we were able to fight through that and got better.  I wasn't overly jubilant by the results, but I was happy with our effort on the night."

Following a weekend respite, the teams will be back in action next Tuesday, April 9 at Earlham. Things are scheduled to get under way at 5 PM.  This observer will be in sunny Florida next week, but will somehow manage to leave the beach long enough to keep you informed about our Charger teams.  Or, maybe I'll do my writing on the beach!!
