Charger Girls Put it All Together in 6-4 Win over Woodward-Granger

June 11, 2019

Some baseball/softball guru from ages past said that it all starts with pitching and defense. If those two elements are present, a team will usually win.  Without them, victory would be rare. Last night ACGC not only had solid pitching and defense, but added a thirteen hit attack to the mix to give the softball team everything it needed to score a 6-4 win over the visiting Woodward-Granger Hawks.  Overall, the game was well played by both teams with few defensive mistakes made by either team.  However, the Charger win didn't come easily.

After W-G opened the game with a run in its first at bat, the Chargers responded with two runs in the bottom of the inning.on consecutive hits by Mady Kelsey, Savana Fuller, and Genevieve Hoover.

With Hawk catcher Emma Anderson driving in two runs in the top of the second inning, W-G regained the lead at 3-2.  Kelsey tied it with her third home run of the season, a solo shot down the left field line.

W-G's Anderson proved to be a nemesis for ACGC all night, as she came up with her third  hit of the game in the fifth inning, stole second and third base, and scored on a ground out. The Chargers managed to knot the score in the bottom half of the inning when Kelsey, ACGC's own version of a nemesis, picked up her third hit of the night.  Pinch runner Rylie Wetzel then stole second base and came around to score on Savana Fuller's single.  Game knotted at five after five.

With Fuller picking up two strikeouts in the Hawks' sixth inning at bat, the stage was set for the Chargers to do some damage.  The bottom of the ACGC's lineup came through when number eight hitter Tori Fuller drew a base on balls and Charger first basemen Jadeyn Carrick singled.  Pinch hitter Reese Coffman then drove in what proved tone the wining run when she got on by a fielder's choice, scoring the younger Fuller from third.

After Sierra O'Brien got on via an error by the W-G shortstop, some wild base running and throwing around of the ball resulted in a double play by the Hawks. W-G nearly pulled off a triple play, but O'Brien managed to retreat to second base safely on a ontrovesial call.  While all of that was going, Carrick managed to score from third to give the Chargers a 6-4 lead.

In W-G's final at bat, Mady Danti was thrown out by Charger left fielder Kylie Young as she tried to stretch a single into a double.  The Chargers finally managed to get Anderson out on a fly ball and Fuller ended the game with her eighth strike out.  Charges win!

Three Chargers--Kelsey, Savana Fuller, and "G" Hoover--in the heart of the batting order had three hits each to pace the offensive attack.  Tori Fuller had two hits including a double.

A nice win for ACGC, improving the season record to 6-8 and its conference mark to 4-5.   The team has an opportunity to even its WCAC mark at .500 with at win at Madrid tonight.  A varsity game only is scheduled for 7 PM.
