Losing Streak Continues for Charger Baseball, But...

June 14, 2019

The Charger baseball team is still looking for its initial win of the season, as the boys of summer lost their fourteenth and fifteenth consecutive games in a doubleheader at Pleasantville last night.  There is a bright spot however.  Whereas earlier in the season the team was getting one or even no hits in games, we are now seeing a half a dozen hits or more in most games.  Such was the case last night in the 11-1 and 13-3 losses.

Coach Taylor Morris can see the improvement.  "We continue to put together good at bats, but nothing comes of it.  When looking at the box score we actually out hit Pleasantville six to four in the first game, but they were able to take advantage when our pitchers weren't throwing strikes.  We are working to get our pitchers to pound the strike zone, and that is our goal for the rest of the season."  Charger pitchers walked twenty one Trojan batters for the night.

In game one Pleasantville was the visitor on the scoreboard and took the lead early when it scored two runs, largely due to two costly ACGC fielding errors.  The Trojans added a single run in the third inning and added three more in both the fourth and sixth innings to make it 9-2.  All of the runs scored in the fourth and sixth innings were made without a hit, as Charger pitchers either walked or hit eight batters, and the defense committed three errors. Pleasantville added a deuce in its last at bat.

The lone Charger run came in the sixth inning when the team put together four singles by Avery Wheatley, Ben Kingery, Charlie Crawford, and Reid Rumelhart to get on the scoreboard.

Rumelhart led the hitting for ACGC with two singles.  Clayton Wardyn, Brock Littler, and Noah Nelson shared the pitching duties.  The trio gave only for hits, but eleven walks and five fielding errors spelled doom for ACGC.

The Trojan hitting came alive in game two as the team got ten hits.  Combined with ten free passes from Charger pitching, Pleasantville led the game from start to finish.  The Trojans tallied four runs in the first inning to take a lead that it never relinquished.

ACGC closed the gap to 4-2 in its third at bat when Cayden Jensen singled and both Noah Nelson and Avery Wheatley reached safely on errors.  Avery was credited with two RBI.  Down 6-2 in the fifth, the Chargers scored a run when Newell Rogers and Wheatley both singled and Bryce Littler doubled to score Rogers.  Three runners were stranded in the inning and ACGC did not score again. The Trojans then put the game away, scoring three and four runs respectively in their final two at bats.

Cayden Jensen paced the Charger hitting with two singles, while Rumelhart and Littler both hit doubles.  Four Chargers--Rumelhart, Crawford, Littler, and Ben Kingery--pitched for ACGC.

Coach Morris recognized the Trojan effort when he said, "Pleasantville has had a lot of success in the last five to ten years and they know what it takes to win.  Our guys are getting better and our baseball IQ is coming along."

The Charger mentor was excited about a planned trip to the College World Series in Omaha next Tuesday.  "We can't wait to be able to watch some of the best college baseball programs in the United States.  We will be able to talk about things as the game goes on."

Before the trip to Omaha the team will play Ogden in a varsity only game beginning at 5PM on Monday.
