The ACGC softball team captured its only invitational tournament of the season yesterday when it swept three opponents from western Iowa in the Audubon Invitational. The opening round found the Chargers shutting out winless Boyer Valley 12-0 in a game whose story was posted yesterday. Following that quarterfinal win, the team went on to topple Underwood, 8-5, in the semifinals before taking the title with an 11-6, extra inning win over West Harrison .
The Chargers got on the board first versus Underwood when it tallied a run in its first inning at bat. After leadoff hitter Jorja Hoover walked, Saige O'Brien bunted safely to put runners on first and second. Two Eagle errors and a Mady Kelsey single allowed Hoover to score, but one run was all the Chargers could come up with.
A big third inning for Underwood in which the Eagles batted around allowed the Eagles to take a 4-1 lead. ACGC countered with a single run when Kelsey walked, advanced to second on a passed ball, and scored on Savana Fullers base hit.
Underwood got the run back in the top of the fifth on consecutive doubles to make the score 5-2. The Chargers picked up a pair of runs in the bottom half of the inning when Kyllie Young walked, Saige O'Brien singled and Mady Kelsey drove in both runners with her second hit of the game. Chargers trail after five, 5-4.
After Fuller struck out the side in the top of the sixth, the Chargers went to work and had a game deciding, four run at bat. Genevieve Hoover got things started with a single. Pinch runner then Rylie Wetzel stole second, and advanced to third on a ground out. Sophie Dorsey got on by an error which allowed Wetzel to score. After Kylie Young was hit by a pitch and Jorja Hoover walked, O"Brien got her third hit of the game to drive in Dorsey. Chargers up 6-5. Fuller then drove in a run with a single and a bases loaded walk to Sierra O'Brien completed the scoring, with ACGC on top 8-5. The game was called at that point due to a time limit rule with the Chargers in charge, 8-5. ACGC was headed to the finals!
Eighth grader Saige O'Brien paced the Charger hitting, as she picked up three hits. Savana Fuller and Mady Kelsey each had a pair of hits. Savana Fuller pitched the distance, giving up six hits, while striking out eight Eagles and walking just one.
ACGC fell behind as it did in the semifinals when West Harrison went up 4-1 after four innings. That all changed in the Chargers' fifth at bat. After "G" Hoover and eighth grader Sophie Dorsey both singled, Reese Coffman got on by an error. When the Hawkeye second baseman committed an error it allowed a run to score and for Tori Fuller to reach first base safely. Jorja Hoover drove in two more runs with a double to right center field. Game tied at 4-4.
After Saige O'Brien bunt singled, the big bat of Mady Kelsey drove in Hoover and O'Brien with a double to give the Chargers a 6-4 lead. West Harrison scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings to knot the score at 6-6 and the game was headed to extra innings.
Another big inning in overtime clinched it for the Chargers when they came up with another five spot in the top of the eighth inning. "G" once again started it off with a triple, followed by another triple by Dorsey which scored "G" and gave the Chargers a 7-6 lead. Dorsey scored on a fielder's choice to give the Chargers an 8-6 lead. After Toril Fuller and Jorja Hoover both reached safely, Saige O'Brien drove them in with a double to make it 10-6. The Chargers added one additional run to make it 11-6 and then put down the Hawkeyes in their final at bat to preserve the win and take home the tourney title.
The team had a huge hitting game versus West Harrison as it came up with eighteen hits. Jorja Hoover led the way, going 5 for 6 in the title game. Saige O'Brien and "G" Hoover each had three hits and Mady Kelsey and Sophie Dorsey each had two.
Savana Fuller went the distance in the circle in all three games for the Chargers, walking only one batter for the entire tournament, while fanning fourteen. Along with Fuller, Mady Kesley, and Jorja Hoover were named to the all tournament team. A job well done by the trio and the entire team!! Go Chargers!
The three wins moves the team closer to the .500 mark for the season, with its record now sitting at 9-11. Next up is a conference doubleheader with Ogden tomorrow (Monday) night on the Charger home field. Game time is 5:30.
