Enough of the Blomgrens! Charger Softball Drops Doubleheader to Van Meter

June 21, 2019

You will have to pardon Charger softball fans if they don't want to hear the surname Blomgren for a long while, for you see the four Blomgren sisters did considerable damage in Van Meter's doubleheader sweep of the Chargers last night.  Eighth grade (!) pitcher Macy Blomgren threw a no hitter at the home team in game number one, a game shortened to five innings, 14-0, by the mercy rule.  Sophomore sister Molly pitched the nightcap, also a Van Meter five inning win, 13-3.  If that wasn't enough, seniors Megan and Mackenzie had twelve hits between them in the shortened games.  Uffda, as they would say in Norway and Decorah.

The Charger fans were pretty silent in game one, as there was virtually nothing to cheer about.  Genevieve Hoover was the only baserunner for ACGC when she was hit by a pitch in the second inning and walked in the fourth.  Meanwhile, Macy Blomgren mowed down Charger batters with eleven strikeouts and her teammates played errorless ball.  It was an impressive performance by a team that, heading into last night, was in third place in the WCAC.  That says a lot about how tough our softball conference is.

Game two, in which the Chargers were the visitors on the scoreboard, started out a bit better for ACGC, as the team got two runners on in its first at bat when Sierra O'Brien got an infield hit, and advanced to second on an error.  She was advanced to third on a ground out. "G" Hoover was then hit by a pitch, and the Chargers had runners at the corners, but the at bat ended there with a fly out.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in asserting themselves when they scored eight runs on seven hits and two Charger errors in the first inning.  The locals showed some life in their second at bat when they tallied three runs.  Sophie Dorsey led off with a base on balls, followed by Tori Fuller's double.  After Kennedy Young walked, Sierra O'Brien's double drove in two runs and moments later Young scored on a passed ball to account for the three run rally.  But that was it for the Chargers.  Blomgren (Molly that is) didn't allow a hit the rest of the way, and her teammates scored two runs in the third inning and three in the fourth to make the final 13-3.

There is no rest for the Chargers, as they travel to Grandview College to face Grandview Christian today (Friday) for a JV/Varsity doubleheader, with the JV game scheduled for 4 PM.  Go Chargers!
