Charger Girls Whip Wildcats, 11-1; Four Sets of Sisters Start for ACGC

June 26, 2019

A big first inning offensively powered the ACGC softball team to an 11-1 five inning win over WCAC rival West Central Valley last night on the Charger home field.  The Chargers scored eight runs on seven hits in their first at bat to break the game open early.  After WCV scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning, ACGC added three more runs in the bottom half of the inning, and Charger pitcher Savana Fuller shut down the Wildcats in the top of the fifth to end the game by the ten run mercy rule.

The first eight Charger batters scored in the first inning with Genevieve Hoover's three run home run being the big blow of the inning.  Jorja Hoover led off the inning with a single. After Savana Fuller got on by an error, six consecutive Chargers got base hits, with "G"'s home run highlighting the inning.  Tori Fuller, Saige O'Brien, and Kylie Young all had singles, while doubles were recorded by Mady Kelsey and Sierra O'Brien. The game was really over a that point.  The only question was what the final score would be.

Here's is an interesting footnote on the big inning.  After those eight consecutive ACGC batters got on base and scored, Wildcat pitcher Abby Bean retired nine consecutive Charger hitters.  The last three batters of the big inning were all retired and all three Charger batters in the next two innings went down as well as well.  That's quite a contrast to how the game began.

The Chargers then scored three runs on five more hits in the fourth inning.  When Jadeyn Carrick singled to leadoff the inning and Savana Fuller got a bunt single, it meant that every starter in the ACGC lineup got at least one hit in the game.  After Jorja Hoover sacrificed Carrick to second, Fuller, Kelsey, "G", and Sierra O'Brien came up with hits and ACGC added three runs to its total.

Savana Fuller was in the circle for the Charger and turned in a solid performance.  The senior hurler gave up just two hits while striking out six and showed excellent control once again as she walked only one Wildcat batter.

Coach Tim O'Brien's starting lineup was a unique one with four sets of siblings in the lineup.  Savana and Tori Fuller, Jorja and Genevieve Hoover, Saige and Sierra O'Brien, and Kennedy and Kylie Young all started for ACGC.

Last night was also senior night when four Charger seniors and their parents were honored.

Jadeyn Carrick, Savana Fuller, Genevieve Hoover, and Sierra O'Brien are winding down their softball careers at ACGC.  The foursome has contributed greatly to the improved performance by the Charger program.  We wish them well!

The team has a few days off before its next competition.  Glidden-Ralston will be in town for a non-conference date on Saturday.  The JV game is scheduled for 5:30 with the varsity to follow.  Go Chargers!
