Charger SB Ends Regular Season With Big 14-4 Win Over West Harrison

July 6, 2019

The West Harrison softball team may be the eleventh ranked team in class 1A, but they have been no match for the ACGC team this season, as the Chargers have recorded two big wins over the 25-3 Hawkeyes.  In mid June the Chargers handled WH,11-6, in the championship game of the Audubon tournament, and last night ACGC traveled to Mondamin and beat the home team, 14-4.

The Charger bats were booming last night, as the team came up with eighteen hits, including six doubles.  Jorja Hoover led off the game with one of those doubles and came around to score on a bunt by Sierra O'Brien and a Hawkeye fielding error to give ACGC a 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 through the second inning  when the Chargers broke the game open in the third and fourth frames to take an 11-0 lead.  Jorja again led things off in the third inning with a single.  Consecutive doubles by Mady Kelsey and Genevieve Hoover produced two runs.  After Tori Fuller bunted her way on and sister Savana got on by a fielder's choice, Jadeyn Carrick's double drove in two more runs to give ACGC a 5-0 lead after three innings.

The torrid hitting continued in the fourth inning when Kennedy Young and Jorja both singled and were moved to second and third by O'Brien's sac bunt.  After Kelsey was intentionally walked, "G" drove in Young and Jorja with a single.  Tori Fuller's base hit then drove in a run and Tori advanced to third when the centerfielder misplayed her base hit.  That was followed by Savana's sac fly that scored Tori to give the Chargers a 10-0 lead.  After Carrick singled, Kylie Young doubled to send pinch runner Alyssa Byars home.  A hard line drive back to the pitcher by Kennedy Young ended the inning, but not before the Chargers hand an insurmountable 11-0 lead.

The Hawkeyes finally got on the board in its fourth at bat when it scored three runs on two hits and two Charger errors.  ACGC failed to score in the fifth and sixth innings, but added a three spot in the seventh.  O'Brien and Kelsey singled, "G" doubled to drive in O'Brien and two WH errors allowed two more Chargers to score.  When the dust finally settled, ACGC's lead had increased to 14-3.  The Hawkeyes added a meaningless run in the bottom of the seventh on a pair of singles and a fielder's choice.  Final score:  ACGC14, West Harrison 4.

"G" led the Charger hitting with four bingos including a pair of doubles.  Jorja and Kelsey each had three hits, while O'Brien, Tori, and Carrick each recorded two.  Savna Fuller went the distance in the circle for ACGC, giving up six hits, while striking out four and walking one.

The convincing win by the Chargers over a ranked team is a good way to head into regional tournament play which begins on Monday.  The Chargers' regular season record ended at 13 wins and 16 losses.  The thirteen wins in the most for a Charger team in the three year history of ACGC softball.  Monday's regional tournament opponent will be West Central Valley.  The game is scheduled to begin at 7 PM on the Charger home field.  If ACGC tops the Wildcats, they will travel to Van Meter to face VM on Wednesday at 7 PM.  Go Chargers!
