Chargers Tame Wildcats; Fuller Near Perfect in 9-0 Win; Van Meter Next

July 9, 2019

Savana Fuller and her Charger teammates left little doubt as to which was the dominant team last night when the ACGC softballers whipped the West Central Wildcats, 9-0, in the opening round of regional softball play.

Fuller threw a near perfect game and was backed up by a ten hit attack and an errorless defensive performance by her cohorts.  Fuller allowed only three Wildcat baserunners en route to her twelfth win of the season.  A runner who was awarded first base in the second inning due to catcher's interference was wiped on when Charger catcher Mady Kelsey made up for her gaffe when she thew out the Wildcat baserunner trying to steal second.  The only other Wildcats to get on base were in their last at bat when Emma R Johnson walked and Abby Spiceinger singled to left field.  Other than that Fuller went out in style in her final pitching performance on the Charger home field.  Her six strikeouts last night gives her four hundred and twenty K's for her career.  The win allows ACGC to advance to the quarterfinal round of tournament play and will face Van Meter on Wednesday at Van Meter, with game time scheduled for 7 PM.

All four of the seniors in the Charger lineup managed to hit safely last night, with Fuller coming up with three of them and Sierra O'Brien, "G" Hoover, and Jadeyn Carrick each recording a single.  It was a good night for the foursome who have contributed much to the Charger program.

The Chargers got on the board in the second inning when Tori Fuller got on via a misjudged fly ball that allowed her to get to third base.  Sister Savana drove her in on a bunt single.

ACGC essentially put the game away in its third at bat when it scored four runs on five hits.  After Jorja Hoover tripled to open the inning, O'Brien' single scored Hoover.  Kelsey's sacrifice fly advanced O'Brien to second base and consecutive hits by "G", Tori and Savana--a triple-- scored three additional runs to give the Chargers a 5-0 lead after the third frame.

The locals added three more runs in the fourth inning.  Reese Coffman led off with a single, was advanced on Kylie Young's sac bunt, and came around to score on a Wildcat error.  After O'Brien got on base on a fielder's choice, an RBI single by Kelsey and a sac fly by "G" drove in one run each to five ACGC an 8-0 lead.

The final run of the game came in the fifth inning when Savana singled and advance to third on the play because of a Wildcat error.  Carrick's single to left field drove in Savana to complete the scoring and give the Chargers a 9-0 shutout win.  The win marks the first post season win for the Chargers in the brief three year history of ACGC softball.

Conference champion Van Meter is next up for the Chargers.  The Bulldogs beat the Chargers twice during the regular season, but ACGC is playing good softball at the right time.  And anything can happen in post season play.  Go Chargers!
