ACGC VB Rolls over Ogden in Straight Sets; Senior Night on Thusday

October 17, 2019

The ACGC volleyball team is one step closer to clinching second place in the West Central Activities Conference after it defeated Ogden in straight sets Tuesday night on the Charger home court.  Ogden was no match for the Chargers who recorded 25-14, 25-8, 25-20 set scores in its fourth consecutive shutout of a conference opponent.

The Chargers started out like a "house o'fire" in the first set when it raced to a 14-4 lead.  Ogden rallied to close the gap to three points at 15-12 when Kylie Young came to the service.  With Young serving the Chargers scored seven consecutive points, including three consecutive aces by Young, to increase the lead to 23-13.  That clinched the win for ACGC in set one.

The Chargers completely dominated set two as the Bulldogs never got on track after falling behind 9-2 early in the set.  With Olivia Laabs serving the ACGC lead increased from 11-5 to 15-6 with Laabs credited for two ace serves.  Reese Coffman also had a successful time at the serve when the Charger defense excelled and ACGC increased the margin to 24-7.

The final set was more competitive as the Bulldogs held a slim lead at 12-11 at the midpoint of the set.  The Chargers held a one point lead at 19-18 when Saige O'Brien came to the serve.  The Charger freshman recorded a four point run during which Alaina Bunde scored on a tip and came up with a block to increase the lead to 23-18.  Chloe Largent's kill two points later completed the sweep for ACGC.

During sets one and two the Chargers were successful on 96% of its serves.  In the final set the serve efficiency dropped to 88%.  Serving is the one area of the game in which the Chargers are lacking consistency.  The team ranks ninth in the conference in serve efficiency with an efficiency of 86.1%, with Woodward-Granger leading with a rating of 91.3%.  By contrast, ACGC leads the league in kills, assists, and blocks.  In Tuesday's match the team came up with a remarkable thirty nine blocks, led by EmmaKay McClain and O'Brien with nine each and Alaina Bunde's seven.

Next up for the Chargers is the final conference match of the season on Thursday.  The team will host Pleasantville for Senior Night and also Youth Recognition night when elementary and junior high players will be recognized.  Things get started at 5 PM with a freshman match, followed by a junior varsity match and then the varsity match at 7 PM.

With ACGC currently in second place with a record of 8-1 in the WCAC, a win Thursday will clinch at least a tie for second place.  Van Meter also has one loss and Woodward-Granger has two losses, so the silver is still up for grabs.  Go Chargers!
