Chargers Clinch Second in WCAC Volleyball; Laabs Honored for 1000 Digs

October 18, 2019

It wasn't decided until the final conference match of the season, but the ACGC volleyball team clinched second place in the WCAC with a 3-0 shutout of Pleasantville on the Charger home court last night.  With Woodward-Granger and Van Meter having two losses in conference play, and with the Chargers having a single loss, the girls needed a win to claim sole ownership of the runner up spot.  The team did not disappoint, as it recorded its fifth consecutive shutout of conference opponents.  The Chargers shutout streak includes wins over Madrid, I-35, Panorama, Ogden, and Pleasantville.

On a night when the two Charger seniors--Hailey Kinz and Olivia Laabs--and their parents were honored, Laabs was also honored for having recorded one thousand digs during her career as a Charger.

ACGC had to battle for the win is set one as a fired up Trojan team led late, 20-19, before a Kylie Young tip hit the floor on the Trojan side of the net to tie the score.  The visitors managed to tie the score at 22 before the Chargers went ahead for good at 23-22.  Two consecutive kills by Chloe Largent sealed the win in set number one.

With ACGC leading 7-4 in set two and Largent at the serve, the Charger sophomore served three consecutive aces to increase the lead to 11-4.  ACGC libero Olivia Laabs put the game out of reach when her service produced six consecutive points that included an ace serve as well as kills by Largent, EmmaKay McClain, and Young to make the score 18-5.  Pleasantville never challenged after that and the Chargers came away with a 25-15 win.

The final set saw the Chargers taking a commanding 20-9 lead, only to see the visitors score seven consecutive points to close the score to 20-16. Largent's kill "stopped the bleeding."  Neither team served very well going down the stretch as each hit the serve out of bounds twice.  The set ended with a Trojan hitting the serve out of bounds to give the Chargers a 25-19 win and the clean sweep. Unofficial statistics show the Chargers with thirty three kills on the night and nine ace serves.  Serving efficiency for the night was at 84% with 63 of 75 serves being successful.

The win improves the season record to 24-5 as the team heads for its final regular season competition--a tournament at Woodward-Granger on Saturday with competition scheduled to begin at 8:30 AM.  Go Chargers!
